Factory Manager
Members of the board of directors of one of the major manufacturing factories in America were reviewing the profit and loss accounts.The members of the board of directors found the salary of the factory manager too high.They decided to lower the factory manager's salary a little.The members of the board of directors chose two people among them.These two people will go to inspect the factory manager.After this inspection, a decision would be made about the factory manager.
The delegation of two went to the factory quietly one morning and entered the factory manager's room. The view they saw was the following:
The factory manager had a cup of coffee in his hand. He had his feet spread out on the table. He was busy spreading smiles. There were no files or documents in front of him.
The delegation of two spoke with the factory manager for a while. They found that the factory manager was not busy at all during this time. The manager had just made a few simple phone calls.
The two-person delegation left the factory manager. Because the board members were waiting for them in the office.They told the board that they stayed with the plant manager for about three. They said that during those three hours the plant manager was not busy with much work.The annual salary of $ 100,000 for the factory manager was higher. There should have been a discount of at least $ 50,000. A big savings could be made here.
Of course, the factory manager did not agree to this deduction from his salary and quit his job. A new factory manager was appointed among the many aspiring who agreed to work at the new salary.
There was a slight but noticeable drop in manufacturing statistics that came to the board of directors after three months.This drop in statistics was considered normal, as the factory manager was new.
At the end of the sixth month, the decrease in the statistics was more.The two previously chosen by the board of directors visited the new factory manager in his room.The new factory manager was very busy and sweaty. He had a phone in one hand and was busy signing documents with the other. The factory manager pointed to the two-person delegation to sit down.Many people came and went to the factory manager's office. The two-person delegation was satisfied with the director's work. They believed that this manager would fix things. So they decided to wait a while longer.
It was the end of the year. The factory, which makes a profit every year, closed this year with a loss. Therefore, there was a great debate among the board members. The board of directors appointed two new people.
The new delegation went to the factory. This delegation went directly to the workshop, not to the manager's office.
The new delegation saw people waiting at work. They asked the workers why they were waiting. The answer they got was this:
"We will start the construction of a new machine, the factory manager said not to start before I came, we are waiting, in any case, he did not have time to leave the electrical workshop."
The new delegation members pulled the old foreman of the factory aside and started talking: They asked why the factory's production dropped by 30% this year compared to last year.
The old foreman replied:
"Gentlemen, our old manager wouldn't take care of the details. He'd make plans ahead. He'd leave the work to us. He would always trust us.We would only tell our manager when we encountered a problem.Our old manager would solve all our problems.He was the real factory manager. He was smiling, he joked with us, but he thought for all of us."
"The current manager is also a very honest, well-intentioned, even more hard-working man.But he doesn't believe any of us, he wants every work to be seen by him.So he works like a foreman for us.Come on, let's not mind this either, but this time the factory management is empty."
"There is no one in the place of the man with a pipe in his hand, trying to see the future, taking measures, thinking."
The board members agreed to meet with the former factory manager. But they barely convinced the former manager for $ 150,000.
Managerialism is a difficult art. It is such an art that its work is invisible to the eye, and its measurement can only be achieved with comparisons and years of experience.Like the great leaders, an impartial historian of that institution can appreciate them. An artist of this art does not come out of those who expect daily appreciation for him.
It is easy for others to advise, to offer a new way, or even to make a decision. The challenge is to avoid doing these things, to overcome our pride, and to make decisions only for ourselves.
